She didn’t know what made her do what she did. There was no particular reason why Cheyenne had agreed to save the bloodied canine that appeared on Oldpack’s doorstep mysteriously, but whatever it was that made her do it, she knew it would be worth it.
She turned her head towards the dog at her side, her injuries were extensive. It was going to take a while for her to heal well enough to become a normally functioning member of society. She felt protective over her, almost motherly towards her. Although, she had to admit, it felt a little strange for her to feel this way about another dog. She'd never really felt such a strong connection with another before. Sure, she was loyal to the pack, she would do anything for another pack member - but it was because it felt like she had an obligation to. It was different with Fluffy, she wanted to protect her. She wanted to make sure nothing happened to her, and she barely knew this dog. But perhaps, she did, in fact, have a reason.
There was something about this vulnerable canine. In a way, she reminded Cheyenne of herself. She saw her own tragic past in Fluffy. She knew what she was going through. She knew that when she was Fluffy’s age, all she wanted was someone to look up to, someone to go to – but she didn’t have that, she was alone. She was determined not to let that happen to Fluffy.
She looked out towards the entrance of the cave-like structure they were sheltered in. She’d picked her favourite “room”, one which had an entrance that was half covered by a tangled tree root. She liked this place. She thought there was something comforting about it. She thought it would be the perfect place for Fliffy to rest. A single shaft of light shone brightly through the entrance, illuminating a small square on the ancient brick floor, if it were not for this shaft of light, the room would be completely dark, but with it the room was lit in an almost in-between night and day shade. It was warm in here too, but not too hot. A light breeze blew in, catching slightly at Cheyenne’s fur. But most importantly, it was quiet. Sure, the occasional dog would trot by, looking for their own room out of the few rows of them there were to take a nap, but other than that no one would disturb them here.
